Predation is a major ecological force and a driver of evolution. While largely researched in animals, it is much less addressed in bacteria, the largest and most diverse group of organisms. This lecture will summarize our efforts to understand the impact of predatory bacteria on the microbial community within which they are embedded. It will present the Bdellovibrio and like organisms, the only known bacterial obligate predators of bacteria, ecological “living antimicrobials”. It will focus on their diversity and on their dynamics in wastewater treatment schemes, including a large scale analysis of microbial wastewater communities and of predatory bacteria, and novel approaches to analyze predator-prey interactions in-situ
