X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) probes local structure around a specific metal element in a range of  ~6 Å from the center. With advent of synchrotron facility, this fine spectroscopy has been powerfully used for elucidating electronic structure such oxidation state and symmetry as well as geometric structure of coordination number, bond distance, and so on. In the talk, I will briefly introduce the fundamentals of XAFS and synchrotron experiments. The general approach and method regarding data analysis will be followed for the interpretation of raw spectra. Finally, I will present four applications in energy materials;  (ⅰ) Fe-ZSM-5 for CH₄conversion, (ⅱ) N-doped ZnS for photocatalytic decomposition of organic dye, (ⅲ) Mo compounds for H₂evolution via water splitting, and (ⅳ) Hematite photoanode for photoeletrochemical water oxidation.
