Nanofibers is known as one of the most useful materials in various bioengineering fields such as cell culture, tissue regeneration, and drug delivery because of large surface-area-to-volume ratio, high porosity, good permeability, and flexibility in functionality. As a result, nanofibers are vigorously used in various applications recently. Especially, nanofibers can introduce three-dimensional (3D) space to cells for attachment. Therefore, cells in/on nanofibers can take cell–cell interaction in all directions as well as 3D environmental effects. Moreover, nanofibers can easily encapsulate or combine with various bioactive materials/molecules, which can provide chemical condition like in-vivo environment. Electrospinning is the well-established method in the production of nanofibers. This method has various advantages such as easy process and cheap and simple process equipment. Moreover, recent days various electrospinning methods with improvement in geometry, fiber morphology, material property, and chemical function.
In Advanced Manufacturing Processes Laboratory (AMP Lab) in Kyungpook National University (KNU), various types of nanofiber structures have been developed with the improvement in electrospinning. In the presentation, various nanofiber structures with the variety of patterns and geometries are demonstrated with their applications such as cell patterning, hydrogel reinforcement, biochip, and 3D cell culture.
