The inertia or momentum of a fluid is typically neglected in microfluidic flows but has recently been shown to be of great practical use for continuous manipulation of particles and cells and engineering fluid streams.  In my research group, we aim to develop high-throughput biomedical devices via inertial microfluidics.  In this talk, I will begin with discussing general physics for particle/cell and fluid stream manipulations using simple geometric modifications within microchannels at moderate Reynolds numbers. Then, I will explain how these principles can be applied in two major directions: (1) Single-cell studies and (2) bio-manufacturing.
